On
the 3rd of November this year I visited Arnold Clark's super store at
Shields Road ,Motherwell. I decided on a S reg Ford Escort 1.4, it was just what I was looking for. I was approached by a Mr. Bill Gould, at first he was so helpful, and as he went off for the keys to give me a closer look at the said car, my wife, daughter and brother in law inspected the cars exterior thoroughly. Mr. G. arrived back with the keys, we then checked the interior of the car, opening the bonnet we discovered a bit of oil coming from the rocker cover, Mr. G, said he would get a new gasket fitted. We found no other defect on the car, apart from the tracking needing adjusted slightly. I decided to put a deposit on the car and purchase the said vehicle. I was told it would be ready for Wednesday 6th.As I was going to see Gary Moore at the Barrow land that night I asked if Friday would be ok, fine said Mr. G. Well Friday at 12 I called to confirm everything was ok but couldn't get Mr. G.was told by receptionist that if he said it would be ready by 3pm then it would be ready. 2.30.phone call from Mr. G,sorry Mr. McMillan, but we noticed that the steering needed some repair and the car won't be ready until tomorrow at three. Arrived at 3pm and Mr. G said everything is ready apart from the bumper? the bumper now had a crack and was obviously involved in a bit of a bump. Well Mr. G said he would get it sorted for me and give me a courtesy car while mine was being fixed, that sounded all right so I went in and signed the deal. After signing I asked Mr. G for a copy of the contract he said I would get my copy sent out by the finance company. Three days later and still no contract I decided to call Mr. G, but couldn't get a reply, a friend told me I should have got a copy when I signed for the car. I called department of trade to enquire, the lady told me that Mr. G was breaking the law by not giving me a copy of the contract on the day of purchase. I called to ask about the bumper and was told by Mr. G, that I was making a big thing out of nothing, I asked about the contract again and he still denied he had to give me a copy, I asked to speak to his superior a Mr. Bryan Webster, well he was just as arrogant, he said I bought the car and that was that I couldn't withdraw from the deal and he was not going to repair the bumper, as it was not covered by the warranty I had taken out, when I asked about the Promises Delivered Slogan on the advert he asked what they had promised? I said Mr. G said he would get the bumper fixed and get me a courtesy car, he said,! Mr. G had no authority to grant that to me, as I told him it was said in front of a witness he said he would get back to me . 2 hours later Mr. G called and asked me to bring the car up to the garage to let his mechanics have a look at the bumper, and if they couldn't fix it they would get someone in to do the job. After he looked at it I was told it would be a couple of days to get it sorted, again I asked about the copy of the contract, Mr. G said :look pal, I've worked in loads of places and if I say you don't get a copy ,you don't get one ok. I got back on to department of trade and the lady Janie} was so nice about it she said she would chase up Mr. G and tell him he is breaking the law and let him know of the consequences. The next day after trying to get a reply of Mr. G, the girl at the dept of trade, got hold of Mr. Webster he said he did not understand why I was not given a copy and would have words with Mr. G ,and a copy would be sent out post haste, as yet I, am still waiting. Just a word to Mr. G, and his like, your day will come when you are the victim, and when it does I will be laughing. PS will keep you up to date with my progress, but I will be telling everyone I know and meet that Arnold Clark hire ASS HXXXS to punt his cars.

I had the misfortune of buying a
brand new ford van from this great car dealer' Aye Right '. It all started
when I decided to buy a ford escort van brand new from a Arnold Clark
ford dealer WRONG!!. I phoned the dealer to enquire about this to be told
that salesman for this was on day off so I traveled 15 miles the next day
to the garage only to be told the salesman was now on holiday and no one
else could help BRILLIANT I then went to another Arnold Clark dealer to be
told that the salesman for vans was on holiday and no one could help OK ?
after that I head home a round trip of about 45 miles and still have not
seen inside or even a brochure of a ford escort van. I now head to yet
another Arnold Clark dealer only 5 minutes from my house with not a ford
van insight but at least a salesman to explain what I am looking for this
guy after only half an hour calls me to say yes he can supply me with what
I want now comes the good bit. I am now buying a ford van from a fiat
dealer with Nissan finance. unfortunately things did not work out and I
had to trade or sell this vehicle with only 1600 miles on the clock I went
back to yes your right ARNOLD CLARK to be told they did not want my van
even as I was looking at spending even more money at ARNOLD CLARK. I went
to a local second hand dealer who did do a deal although I lost more than
half my money at least they offered me more than ARNOLD CLARK. SO I THINK
YOU KNOW WHAT I THINK OF
ARNOLD ******* CLARK AND ANY TIME ANY OF MY FRIENDS ARE TALKING OF BUYING
A NEW OR SECOND HAND VEHICLE I THINK YOU KNOW WHERE I TELL THEM NOT TO GO
! .

At long last somewhere where the
victims of this cowboy can air their views! My horror story begins
with being involved in a car accident, it was not my fault a young boy who
was sitting in a hidden exit put his car into first instead of reverse and
accelerated into the middle of the road I had the misfortune of traveling
down. Although my car was badly crumpled at the front I did not see
any fluid leaking from the engine and decided to try and make it home and
get in touch with my insurance company as the boy concerned was so young I
panicked that he may not be insured. I watched my temp. gauge all
the way home and it didn't shift. When I got home and phoned I was
told not to worry that the recommended garage would be informed and they
would contact me to arrange the collection of my car and then it would be
returned to me fully valeted etc. Now enter Arnold Clark!
Firstly the chap dealing with accident repairs couldn't have been any more
unhelpful if Arnold had put hi! m up to it himself. I explained
everything that happened and was told that because I had driven my car
home I could drive it to the garage, that because it was Friday they would
not be able to collect my car until Monday and only then would they be
able to give me a hire car, but if I drove my bumped car to them then it
would speed up the whole process, when I said that I had made it home and
didn't want to push my luck I was then told again why I should drive to
them. Eventually after much pleading because I am a mother and need
a car for my toddler I was told that they would send out a pick up truck.
After three weeks my car was ready to collect on leaving the garage I was
immediately aware that I could not any get hot air, also that the car just
didn't feel right. I phoned the next day and organized to bring it
back in. Which I did, I was told that my cooling system had not been
filled properly and that apart from that the car was road worthy, please
keep in mind that ! Arnold Clark are fully aware that I am driving around
in this car with my child. Two weeks later my car dies a death, leaking
oil and water, luckily I was round the corner from my home and not on a
busy road, it was that sudden. I immediately phone Arnold Clark,
much humming was done and I was put on hold for a long period of time.
Eventually the manager comes on the phone. He then pulls out an
incredible rabbit from that Arnold Clark Hat, which is that because I made
the decision to drive my car home I must have cooked the engine, which
means that the fact that my car is now totally knackered is all my fault.
To say that I didn't cause the accident and to say that I actually fell
out with the garage in the first place because I wouldn't drive the car to
them after I had the accident, also to say that I had to return my car
because they didn't fill my cooling system properly, totally escaped their
attention. I then phoned my Insurance Company who said that they
would have! e to speak with Arnold Clark and then two days later I was
informed that on the information given to them by Arnold Clarks diagnostic
engineer it was indeed my liability that the engine had been cooked,
although Arnold Clark totally forgot to tell them that they had not filled
my cooling system, which in itself is enough to do my engine terrible
damage, also Arnold Clark told me that my car was 'road worthy', when in
fact it verged on being a crap heap, I could have been driving anywhere
when my engine totally gave in. So the fight began, I wrote to
Arnold Clark himself, obviously he never saw the letter as his customer
services manager replied to me saying that it was nothing to do with them
(surprise!!!), I then wrote to my insurance company and told them
everything, I even said that if Arnold Clark had made me aware of this at
the start when I was honest enough to tell them I had made it home then I
would understand, but to then argue with me to try and get me to drive my
! car to them surely shows their incompetence, apart from the fact that
they obviously never carried out the proper test on the car before handing
it back to me. Eventually the insurance company agreed to pick up
the bill for a new engine to be put in my car, I had to contribute £300.
In the mean time the wonderful people at A.C. were threatening to charge
me for storing my car at their garage and also wanted to charge me for
collecting my car when it broke down the second time!!!! When I
collected my car I was treated like something that was scraped off their
shoes, I was not told anything with regards to the new engine in my car,
they just wanted me out. So far so good my car is still going, but
the whole 3 month experience I had with this garage has left me very
dubious of garages now, I have not gone into the full extent of everything
that went on I would still be typing by this evening if I did!!!!.

I have to agree with what your saying. I am a sales person who works for one of the companies you have advertised ( no not
Arnold Clark ) and I know he sells dodgy cars that's why he can always give more for people's part exchanges and I must say he does do good deals but as I always say to my customers "Do they really want a death trap". Keep up the good work

Just back from A. Clark Kilmarnock Road Glasgow. Car booked in for service, told that I could wait as it would only take one and a half hours. Arrived at 8.40. Working on my computer while I waited. At 10.50 asked Erica at what stage my car was at. "oh they are still working on it, will be about another hour" I then popped out to make phone call to find my car still parked on forecourt untouched. i.e. Erica was telling lies and clearly used to covering up the inadequacies of the service department Asked to see service manager called Steve Taylor who then admitted his mistake but immediately started raising his voice when I demanded a solution. Of note was that Steve suggested my car could be ready within 30 minutes (bear in mind it has not been started yet and normal service time is 1 and a half hours????? ) Then asked to speak to Garage Manager for whom I waited a further 10 minutes. Very little expression of concern/apology given. Car still not serviced but unfortunate! Ely I am tied in with the Great Clark Debacle as I have a lease car.....watch this space. .

hi, great site i like the way it comes right below them on the search engines i bought a Clio from this cunt and it was a wreck, when i picked the car up i thought the paint was different colours on different panels but the salesman said it was because it was pearl silver a couple of days later i washed the car and found over spray and paint runs on every panel of the car except the roof. i took the car back to them and said i wanted my money back as i had paid £6000 cash for the car and they said i could only exchange it for another one which i did but they did not have a silver one only lavender blue which is minging and a couple of days later found this had also been the victim of a bump and dodgily repaired i wrote to Renault and complained but they said they could do nothing as i bought the car second hand. Arnold Clark said they would fox the faults and they did but 6 months on the paint started flaking off again it was a wreck my nightmare ended when a drunk driver smashed into it and wrote it off but i would never go near them again because their cars are pish and their body shops are cowboys and they are not interested once they have their money PROMISES DELIVERED MY FIRKIN ARSE..

Just thought you would be interested in this story of my mother in laws experience with Arnold SHARK (sorry
Clark). Just over 18 months ago she bought an R reg Rover automatic from the Livingston garage. The cost was £6500 I thought this was expensive but she said that you pay that little bit more when you buy from a reputable dealer, and this was very important as she is disabled and needs her car more than most. The car was a one owner from new and only had 16000 miles on the clock, she was given an 8 week warranty and off she went. Ten weeks and just 400 miles later the gearbox packed in, when she contacted Arnold Clark they agreed that they would replace this free of charge, fine you might say but 1 year and 5000 thousand miles later the engine blew, again she contacted Arnold Clark and explained the situation "contact Rover they said its a disgrace". So she contacted Rover and was told that the car was to old to be considered by them and that she should again take it up with Arnold Clark, so again she contacted Arnold Clark and was told she should have bought an 18 month warranty at the time of purchase. I know the car is nearly 5 years old but it has only done 22000 miles and has had a new gearbox and now a replacement engine. Only in the Car industry can you get away with selling goods that are not fit for their purpose, and only Arnold Clark would treat a Disabled woman with such contempt. The car has had a replacement engine fitted at the cost of £800 but the mileage cannot be verified and so she is left with a car worth only a fraction of the value.

Typed in Arnold Clark Automobiles to see what was there. Did this only because I have been less than happy with the customer service and attitude of the staff at Arnold Clarks branch in Giffnock, Glasgow. I must agree with others who have contributed to your site, that you should hand over your money and don't bother us again unless you want to open your wallet and let us make you believe we provide a service. My experience was having bought a new Polo last year My first VW)and eight months later phoned the branch to state that I was experiencing vibration on the the steering, only to be told "your first year service is approaching, wait till then" Being not very mechanically minded, I reluctantly agreed. On receiving my car from the first service, I was told that there was a fair bit of wear on the tyres but that they would be good for another 1000 miles. I asked about the vibration and was told that there was nothing to worry about. Not long after, I was informed by a policeman neighbour that my tyres were bordering on the 'illegal'. I took my car to a trye dealer in Glasgow to have the front tyres replaced. I was told by the technician that there was abnormal wear and tear on the tyres and asked if I would like steering and wheel alignment carried out. I agreed. I watched as the technician carried out the procedure on this computerized machine while the car was sited on a ramp. The result showed that there was tracking adjustments required on the front wheels (which was minimal). However a message appeared on the computer (Contact your Dealer) indicating problems with the rear suspension unit. I asked the chap to write down what the problem was, whereby he stated that he would let me have a computer printout of all the readings that the machine had found. The technician explained that he believed that the variation in the suspension unit may possibly be due to a kink in the unit, and advised me to take the car back to my dealer. In effect the report indicated that the car was being driven from the back at an angle and not forwards as expected, and this was the reason for the abnormal tyre wear. He intimated that the front adjustment would take no longer than a few minutes but advised against him touching the car as it may have implications on my warranty at this stage. I must stress that I was charged or the tyres but not for the steering and wheel alignment. On taking my car back to Arnold Clark and explaining what had occurred with the independent steering and wheel alignment, I can only say, as well as being uninterested, I felt as though I was a five year old being scolded by school bullies. The first statement of the receptionist was being informed that tyre wear such as I had encountered was due to inadequate inflation of the tyres. I informed the lady I may be not mechanically minded but I do look after my cars (especially the menial things that are required, screen wash, cleaning etc) and that I check my tyre pressures regularly. It was so insulting. However I left the car with all the problems that I had encountered and the advice I had been given by the independent tyre firm. I was asked to leave a copy of the report from the tyre firm which I was initially prepared to do, but with the attitude of staff I told them I would withhold it to see if there were similarities between reports. Amused at this, they were not. I received a phone call later on in the day by some chap who, I believe, was quite confrontational. He informed me that he would only be prepared to carry out the procedure if I was prepared to pay £96 + vat. After a bit of discussion I reluctantly agreed. Otherwise I would have been driving a dangerous car. I also wanted to see what they came up with. At 4.30 I received a call that my car was ready. I asked on arrival if the problem had been identified an corrected, whereby I was informed curtly that the car now met the manufacturers specifications. I asked if that meant I would not experience further abnormal wear and tear, only to again be informed steering and wheel alignment and that the report was in the car outside. I assumed that the report was not with the documentation in order that It could not be discussed. I then started to write a check for the earlier stated amount only to be told that the price was now £75. This apparently was because I was originally going to be charged for two hours work and was quoted wrongly. I duly paid and left. I found the report in the car as promised. The vibration is better than it was. My next course of action is to take the Arnold Clark report back to the Independent tyre firm for comparison as I must admit it means very little to a layman like myself. I am delighted that there are others out there who have had similar experiences and I no longer feel isolated, and like others I would not consider any further business from Arnold Clark. I have been driving for 35 years and have never encountered such arrogance fro any car dealer in the past.
