Having read the comments on this site, it reminds me that I have gotten off lightly with the appalling service I have received at the hands of the seemingly well-meaning but incompetent staff who attend the pile of bricks which goes under the alias of Arnold Clark Liverpool (Sefton St). I bought a P-reg Nissan Micra from "good old Arnie" in April 2002 and I thoroughly love my car. 2 months later, the gear box started playing up and as it was well within the Autocare TWO YEAR "warranty" I made an appointment to take it in and had a courtesy car for a couple of days. Up till now, they could not be faulted. The work was carried out and when i got the car back it was running as if it had just come off the line. When i got the car, it had about 28,500 miles on the clock ... good for a car that when I got it, was 6 years old. In October, I found that I could remove the key from the ignition WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING !!!!! Back to Arnie, whose oily rag said that the key was worn and as it was wear and tear, was not covered by the warranty. (he did say that a new set of keys would cost approximately £40 and the central locking about £200 to replace) Wear and tear, my arse how could TWO keys be worn down to the same degree ........ the best is yet to come. In April 2003, I decided against my better judgement to book my car in for it's annual service. I booked the car in SIX weeks in ADVANCE ...... plenty of time to get a courtesy vehicle with automatic transmission booked ...... not Arnold Clark ...... to that cunt that is impossible ..... they do not have courtesy cars !!!!! I could see that this was going to be like getting a blind man to read semaphore, so I waited while the car was serviced ..... £168 for the service which comprised of : £115.00 ..... service £40.00 ..... MOT (as it was due to be done) the rest is comprised of Arnie's 3 favorite letters... VAT. The car was serviced and as you would expect if it was Mot'd after it was serviced it should pass ...... They FAILED it !!!!!!! They said that the panhard rod at the back was damaged and would have to be replaced ..... to the tune of : £118.00 ..... for the rod £50.00 ..... to fit the rod and the rest as we all know is comprised up from Arnie's 3 favorite letters of legal extortion. This time it cost me the princely sum of £197.00 I returned on a pre arranged date to be told that the part they had ordered had arrived ..... correct part ..... WRONG car. While i exercised my consumer rights and told them in English and with out resorting to swearing, which by now they were not dealing with the usual pond life that any one who works with the public encounters on a daily basis, I informed them that I was going seek the help of trading standards and if my car was not repaired/re-tested i was going LEGALLY remove a vehicle from the car-lot. It was then I was offered to have fitted, a panhard rod form ANOTHER Micra ...... only to be told that I would have to still pay for the replacement rod...... FULL PRICE ......for a basically 2nd hand part !!!!!! What saved me (and them) from blowing my stack, was the fact that a mechanic reported that the part had be located in the St. Anne Street branch in Liverpool. The part was picked up and fitted. The car was re-tested and passed it's MOT. (The re-test was done free) The tight bastard that is Arnold Clark still charged me £2.50 for screen wash that I put in before the initial service. If you can imagine Arnold Ebenezer Clark's franchises servicing 1 million cars per year, charging £2.50 for screen wash on every car which could actually be the mechanic pissing in your screen wash bottle, just think how much the greedy twat will make at our expense. the bottom line is basically ........ IF YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF AND DRIVE A DEATH TRAP THAT COULD POSSIBLY KILL YOU AND MAYBE OTHER INNOCENT PEOPLE ....THEN ARNOLD CLARK WANTS TO MEET YOU AND TAKE YOUR HARD EARNED CASH ..... ps: Have a nice day !!!! 7.6.2003 |

Congrats on the site well done ! Bought a Vectra from AC in Prestwick in 2002 . Waited 3 months for missing minor parts to arrive after about 10 phone calls. On board computer never worked after leaving the showroom however as I don't live locally I was told that on the two occasions I did attempt to return to Ayrshire for a repair job they were too busy. On the third occasion I was informed the warranty was no longer valid and hence the repair was never done. Promises never delivered ...too true 10.6.2003 |

Just a quick story or should I say NIGHTMARE. Bought a Fiat Brava 1.4 from Alison Street Glasgow, Speedo in car was showing 120mph at idle on occasions the fuel gauge and temp gauge would take a wobbler at the same time (this was the time of the fuel crisis to). I took it back they said Nope nothing the matter with it. This lasted a month and finally went straight off the night shift and demanded a mechanic drove the car with me in the passenger seat. And god must have been traveling in the car that day I got a result Yippee.. THEN I was losing steering fluid from a burst pipe and had to pay the full price because it wasn’t covered. But the biggest annoying problem was the lacquer on the drivers door came peeling off so I emailed the customer service, I got a reply saying contact this guy so I did and again he replied back so I thought fine maybe I am getting some place now, But that was the last I heard from him, He wouldn’t have the common courtesy to email me back. So decided to take a trip back up to Glasgow again and managed to get the body shop expert to come and look at it which he spent over half an hour taking measurements of the paint thickness to make sure it wasn’t re-sprayed, result the car had the original paint when it left the factory so were they going to fix it???? Well I thought right from the start they would because of the 3 year body cover, But no the car was older than 3 years by 2 months, That boy just spent 30 min wondering round the car for zero. But I pointed out this problem when I first purchased the vehicle (3 months before the car was 3 years old) and it was to be repaired, at that time it wasn’t that bad only the size of a finger nail, But now it was the size of a leg. Listen to this they said it was down to the bad weather we have been having WHAT!! I said WHAT! are you trying to tell me that these cars weren’t built for the rain ya numbtae. And then the motor on the rear window stopped working and so did the rear brake light strip both I paid for. Here’s another the car wasn’t valeted either when I picked it up, the dent on the bonnet was to be fixed but yes it was still there. There I think I have told you everything, Oh no I never told you how the story ended, the Brava had an early bath It got written off in a smash with four brand new tires and brake pads, a new oil change and new spark plugs, all 1 week old. And still owed Fiat finance money. So what did I learn out of this? Don’t buy a car off of Alistair Craig (Head of Sales) EVER!! And Arnold Clark. And don’t buy a Fiat. Alistair by the way ran away into the back of the shop every time I showed my pretty little face at Alison Street. One face I won’t forget in a hurry. 10.6.2003 |

I recently was thinking about selling my car and purchasing a new one. I have friends who are in the motor industry and am well aware of the reputation that Mr Clark has. I bought the Honda Civic Coupe from an other local reputable dealer for £4500 and after 11 months was hoping to upgrade. There is a Arnold Clark (Dundee) dealership but 200 metres from my home, it was 6.45pm in the evening and as i was driving home I thought to myself "Why not pop in briefly to see what they might offer me as a trade in?" Thinking that whatever they offered would probably act as a benchmark for when I did decide to sell my Car. Expecting the worst, they certainly delivered the goods. With average mileage for its age, they (after 15 mins of deliberating whilst I was in the forecourt) came up with the princely figure of £700!!!! I quote "That is just an estimate though Sir, we'd have to check it over first". Absolutely frightening, considering when I did eventually sell it 4 months later privately, I received £3400!!! What more can i say??? Arnold Clark - piss poor service, piss poor employees, piss poor attitude, Rich Conman!!! 11.6.2003 |

A few years ago I booked in my car for a service with Arnold. It was a K reg Pony, but in good nick. The car was put in before 9am, and at 3pm I got a call from them saying the MOT had failed because of a broken handbrake. 'How do you mean broken' I asked. 'Well' he says 'it has actually come away from the car and we have to replace it'. I cant print what I said but basically, I made it clear to them that the hand brake was attached to the car when I dropped it off, and was still attached when I handed over the keys. He then went on to explain to me that part of the test is to place as much force on the brake to ensure that it is securely in place, and it obviously was not seeing as it came away in his hand. I was most annoyed, to say the least, and argued strongly that they must be at fault, seeing as the lever and parts were not even loose or wobbly before. Anyhow, the car was not in a condition to be driven until the brake was reattached, so I had no option but to get it repaired. This too 3 days, and they did not even let me have the use of a courtesy car. So, I arrive on the afternoon to collect the car, pay £350 for the MOT and get into the car. I go to wind the window down, only to find it wont work. What on earth, I sigh. On getting out of the car again to go back into the office, I find the window winder cap on the floor of the car. The only way it could have gotten there is for the winder to be removed. On complaining to the manager I am told that it is not their fault and it must have been like that when the car came in. Needless to say, I had to take the car away and get the window fixed elsewhere. I have never and will never go back to Arnold Clark, Dundee - any of them.
